Leprosy was endemic in Britain from 11th to 14th Century and was greatly feared. Because of the physical disfigurement it could cause, many thought it to be a form of curse. About 320 ‘lazar’ hospitals were established in England during that time, and one of these was on the outskirts of Winchester – St. Mary Magdalen was located away from the city to distance the lepers from the city’s population.
